FURCULA, sandstone sculpture
FURCULA, sandstone sculpture
This sandstone sculpture reimagines the furcula—commonly known as the wishbone—as both a symbolic and structural form. At its center, the furcula is rendered with smooth, sweeping curves that taper delicately to pointed tips, evoking both the fragility of bone and the strength of crafted sandstone. The natural texture of the sandstone lends the piece a fossil-like quality.
Radiating from the central form, a finely carved lattice unfolds—a network of intersecting lines and branching shapes reminiscent of veins, roots, or woven fibers. These elements contrast the furcula’s organic simplicity, creating a layered visual dialogue between structure and ornamentation, nature and geometry.
The surface shifts subtly between polished planes and lightly textures, allowing light and shadow to move across the piece and enhance its dimensionality. The work invites close inspection while maintaining a quiet monumentality, blending the raw material presence of stone with the delicate language of anatomical form.
