Basurto

Basurto captures the foyer of one of the most recognizable residential buildings in Colonia Condesa, Mexico City. Designed by architect Francisco J. Serrano and built between 1942 and 1945, the Edificio Basurto is considered one of his most important works and a significant example of Mexico City’s Art Deco architecture, particularly its Streamline Moderne expression.

Originally built in the gardens of the Basurto residence as a rental apartment building, the project is defined by its elegant curves, continuous spatial flow, and carefully composed vertical circulation.

This photograph focuses on the building’s interior foyer, where the repetition of curved balconies creates a powerful sequence of rhythm, depth, and light. Seen from below, the architecture becomes almost abstract: successive horizontal bands frame the central void and guide the eye upward toward a luminous opening.

The image reduces the space to its essential elements — curve, proportion, shadow, repetition, and perspective — revealing the sculptural quality of Serrano’s architecture and the precision of its spatial composition.

Printed on 315 gsm Cold Press Watercolour Paper, the textured matte surface gives the photograph a tactile fine-art quality while preserving its tonal depth, architectural detail, and subtle transitions of light.
